If you’re giving away free coaching and “discovery sessions” to get clients…

you’re not alone.

It’s one of the most common strategies new coaches use.

But there’s a catch:

Free coaching doesn’t get you clients.

It gives you reps. Which is awesome especially when you are new.

It can help you build your confidence in coaching.

But it is NOT a leveraged strategy to get consistent clients.

And there’s a big difference.

The Real Role of Free Coaching

If you’re in your first 30–60 days of coaching:

👉 You need practice.

👉 You need conversations.

👉 You need to get comfortable leading calls and applying your method in real time.

And for that?

Free coaching is a fantastic tool.

It builds confidence.

It sharpens your skills.

It helps you clarify your process by doing the work.

But… please don’t mistake reps for paying clients!

Because giving your time away for free isn’t a dependable and predictable client acquisition strategy.

It’s a warm-up drill.

Why Free Doesn’t Convert

Here’s what happens when you rely on free sessions as your main growth strategy:

  • You attract “browsers,” not buyers

  • You fill your schedule, but not your client roster

  • You start resenting the thing you love doing, because it’s not paying off

People say yes to free calls for lots of reasons:

Curiosity. Boredom. Guilt. Hope.

But rarely commitment.

They might want to talk. They might want to ‘try it out’. They might feel that they are doing YOU a favor. And that is NOT what you want them to feel.

You need to ask yourself; are they really committed to change?

Do they have the drive and desire to stick with the coaching, to push through their challenges and actually invest in their growth?

Because what I’ve discovered in almost 20 years of marketing, sales and coaching is that the “people who pay money are the people who pay attention.”

Want a Smarter Approach?

Use Consideration Assets.

A consideration asset is content that builds belief before the enrollment call.

Instead of putting all the pressure to ‘prove yourself’ live on your first coaching call, share valuable, relationship building assets like:

  • A mini-book that explains your framework

  • A short workshop that highlights key shifts

  • A video that warns of the big mistakes clients make

  • A checklist or email series that guides a first win

  • A weekly newsletter that keeps them engaged and learning more

These assets warm people up before they talk to you.

So that when they do, you’ve already established some trust with them.

They’re already considering potentially working with you.

This is the power and leverage of marketing your business on the internet, and still so many coaches neglect to use these basic tools.

The sales call should mainly be about helping them make a decision instead of ‘selling them on your service’.

This Is What Scalable Coaching Looks Like

Every coach has a choice:

👣 Keep giving away your time to strangers, hoping it turns into a client…

—or—

⚙️ Build systems that attract, educate, and convert the right people in a consistent and predictable way.

If your calendar is filled with free sessions that don’t go anywhere, you have a marketing problem.

You need to re-focus on moving your prospects through the stages of the conversation:

  1. Gain their Attention

  2. Earn their Interest & Consideration

  3. Help them make the decision to Enrol

And your goal should be to create leverage through content assets that move them through these stages.

Big Takeaway

Free coaching builds confidence.

Consideration assets build clients.

Use free when you’re new.

But don’t mistake it for a scalable strategy.
